Harvest Monday 7.9.2012

Upon our return Saturday from a week away, I don't think we had been home all of 10 minutes, and we were picking veggies from the garden, snacking on berries, and Ezra had a chicken in his arms. Ah, it's good to be home.
The Padrons got a bit large while away, but we will enjoy them nonetheless, and the tomatoes are really starting to come in stronger. Oh, we're really enjoying Summer!
We picked this head of lettuce to eat for dinner just after we arrived home, and paired it with some garden-fresh carrotts, tomatoes and cucumber.  This week we were also able to harvest our first tomatillos of the season. Soon, we will have enough for hot sauce and salsa making, but these will most likely be turned into a quick topping for tacos this week.

Yes, that is a pumpkin. Isn't it October?  Ahem. Not sure what we did wrong here, but this was supposed to be one of several pumpkins for carving come Halloween.  I guess we'll be making a trip to the pumpkin patch. We also picked more of our Ein Shemer apples - they have such a great balance of tart & sweet. They are edible right off the tree, but I do think they will also make great baking apples.

We have some much over-due favas that dried right on the plant, but there must be a good recipe using these out there somewhere, right? I see some recipe hunting in my near future.  We dug up the last of our potatoes today to make room for some incoming peppers.

And, our house just isn't our house unless there are freshly picked flowers strewn about.  We harvested a volunteer amaranth from last year's planting. We have some sunflowers that are just sprouting, while others are ready for harvest.  My little man happens to love sunflower seeds, so these below will be dried and roasted.

Onions, leeks, basil, kohlrabi, and beets. All ready for harvesting, and all needing to be brought into this kitchen in some way or another. I love returning from a trip, but still having no need to run to the market.

Carrots! Kimchi will be made from a few, and a fresh, carrot & ginger salad from the others.

Oh, yes, I'm still filling our house with harvested flowers.
Have a wonderful Monday, and head on over here to check out what others are harvesting.

  4. Falafel, dried favas can be used to make falafel! Wow, you really have a superabundance of veggies. I'm envious of those Padrons, my plants have just started to bloom.
