The Return of Light

I had big celebratory plans for the Winter Solstice this year, but not one of them came to fruition.  This week was spent tending to the little man in our house - day and night - trying to get him well...with daily Pediatrician checks, and a sprinkling of visits to our Children's Hospital, it was an exhausting week that left little time for anything else.  This afternoon, I thought maybe we could get a fire going outdoors as the sun set, but the Santa Ana winds were in full-effect, so that did not happen either.  Nothing was happening as I planned, my solstice plans went by the wayside, and I don't think one person noticed except myself.

When it came time for the sun to set, we bundled up and walked a bit down the street to one of the Self Realization Farms to watch it go down. It was a beautiful moment, and one that trumped any pre-conceived plans.

Rather then my roaring outdoor fire, we lit a single candle over dinner to celebrate the return of light, and we used an old needle-felted ball I made for Ezra to try and explain what all this solstice stuff was about.

It was a simple Solstice celebration, yet it felt absolutely complete and perfect for our circumstances.  With many loose holiday-ends still left unattended, house work to be done, marketing to be had, and a garden that needs attention, we are reminded that simple can be perfectly satisfying.
